Creating Change: Reflections on Black Maternal Health Week and Our Collective Impact
April marked a significant time for the Arika Trim Foundation as we joined communities across the nation to observe Black Maternal Health Week. For us, this week was more than just a time to raise awareness—it was an opportunity to take action, amplify voices, and continue the fight for equitable maternal healthcare for Black mothers.
Throughout the week, we participated in MILES FOR MAMAS, a fundraising event dedicated to supporting Black maternal health initiatives and raising much-needed funds to address the disparities that too many Black mothers face. The turnout was incredible, and we are so grateful for every single participant, donor, and supporter who helped us take steps toward creating a more just healthcare system.
MILES FOR MAMAS: A Race for Change
The MILES FOR MAMAS event was a powerful display of unity and purpose. From runners and walkers to those cheering us on from afar, each step taken represented a commitment to change. The funds raised during this event will directly support Black maternal health programs, provide essential resources, and advocate for systemic change in how Black mothers are treated during pregnancy and childbirth.
We are incredibly proud of the love, energy, and passion that everyone brought to this event, and we can’t wait to continue this movement with you.
Community Engagement: Joining Forces with Leading Institutions
Our commitment to Black maternal health extended beyond MILES FOR MAMAS as we proudly collaborated with two incredible institutions during the week: Howard University Hospital and Morehouse School of Medicine.
Howard University Hospital’s Black Maternal Health Week Health Fair & Community Baby Shower: We were honored to join the health fair and shower event, where we were able to connect with local families, provide vital resources, and share knowledge on how to navigate the healthcare system for safer and more supportive maternal care.
Morehouse School of Medicine’s Mini HeLa Panels Event: At this powerful event, we engaged with leading health experts and advocates, addressing issues surrounding ethics, equity, and maternal health justice. The event allowed us to elevate the conversation about the legacy of Henrietta Lacks, the ethical considerations in healthcare, and how we can ensure that Black women are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve in every part of their healthcare journey.
Why This Matters: A Call to Action for Maternal Health Equity
The disparities in maternal health for Black women are alarming—and they are entirely preventable. We know that Black mothers are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than their white counterparts. This is not a coincidence. This is a systemic issue that requires bold, sustained action.
At the Arika Trim Foundation, we are committed to shifting the narrative. By raising awareness, sharing resources, and fostering community engagement, we are creating a ripple effect that will ultimately lead to lasting change in how Black maternal health is approached and treated.
Our goal is clear: Every Black mother should receive the care, respect, and support she deserves. That means fair treatment during prenatal visits, access to quality healthcare, and the removal of biases that endanger lives. This fight is not just about statistics; it’s about people—mothers, daughters, and families who deserve to thrive.
